Playa Sámara is on the Pacific coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, 38km south-west of Nicoya. It is about 4 to 4 1/2 hours drive from San José, the capital city of Costa Rica, and 2 hours from Liberia, the nearest international airport.

By car, the easiest way to explore Costa Rica is by car. From San José take the Interamericana Highway (CI1) north, take the turnoff for the Tempisque Bridge-Puente de la Amistad de Taiwan, and cross the Gulf of Nicoya, and turn south to Playa Sámara.

From Liberia, turn south and follow the signs for Nicoya (HWY 21) and on to Playa Sámara (HWY 150)

By Air, the two international airports in Costa Rica are in San José and Liberia. The nearest airport to Sámara is at nearby Playa Carillo, 15 min, drive to Playa Sámara. SANSA offers daily flights from San José to Carillo in the dry season. Nature Air flies from Liberia to Nosara, 45 min. drive to Playa Sámara.

By Bus, the bus company "Alfaro" leaves daily from San José to Sámara at 12.00 a.m. from the Coca Cola bus terminal, Calle 14 & 16 Avenida 5. It takes around 4 - 5 hours.
